38 tmx versus 39pwk which is better?

i'm having some trail mods done to my 97 explorer 400 and will be looking to buy one of these in the future. which one is better? also i've seen performance websites claiming you can get as much horsepower out of the stock carb bored to 35.5 as the 38tmx. is this bull?

I totally think it's bull. I had a stock carb that was bored to 35.5 and it didn't perform near as good as the 39pwk. The 39 has way more power and the throttle response is most noticeable attribute of this carb. The stock carbs throttle response is terrible compared to the 39 when modded. I've heard that the 39 stomps all over the 38tmx carb. I personally couldn't say.

I had the 38 TMX for years and had a lot of headaches with it. I didn't like the design or layout and think the 39 is easier to work on, better to tune. The 39 also seems to have a much better build quality than the 38, I would go with the 39.

Well..................Hello NC, glad to hear from you.
The PWK carb is so much simpler to tune than a TMX. In my honest opinion I wish they wouldnt even build the TMX, the regular TM does a fine job and is also easy to tune. To say you can get as much power out of a stock bored carb as the pwk is a load of bull. Like duneaholic said the throttle response is absolutely amazing.

I tried everything to make the 39mm use less or lose fuel. i never got it right ,i just live with it. I was wondering about the 38 or 42 tmx carbs. the power and tunning are easy on the 39mm and that is good because you'll allways be tunning it.
