K & N airfilters, anyone use them?

I tried one out in my Xplorer 400 for a while. It gained a couple of top speed MPH and seemed to run just a hair cleaner, especially at higher speed. The filter medium looked thin to me, but the oil is supposed to catch all the dust. I personally run a Uni. I don't know whether the K&N filters well enough, but I know the Uni does.

I run the KN in my OO Xplorer 400cc,and I do keep a good watch on it.Im just not certain that it filters out the finer particles of dirt/dust.They [KN] says that it's the best around, but im still cautious.
I know for sure that the carb takes in more air with it,I can actually hear it breathing in more air on acceleration.Performance?I really dont know.===Bill

An old mechanic friend of mine told me a trick to see how well your air filter is working. Put a little dab of grease on your finger, then smear some in the intake tract past the filter. You don't need hardly any, just enough to leave a little residue. The grease should NEVER get any dust stuck to it. Any dust you see will be a small percentage of what actually went through the engine. I tried this when I got my Uni & is still clean, but have only about 100 miles so far. An outerwear is supposed to help the K&N in heavy dust, as well as keep water out of the engine, though I never tried one.

What you said is very true, there should be no dust on the circumference of the intake venturi. Unfortunately there was when I used a K&N under very dusty conditions doing what was prescribed in their operating/maintenance instructions.
Racing in the dunes or low dust conditions were no problem but when running in the dust of iron ore aggregate roads and trails the K&N is not as effective as the UNI. IMHO

Thanks to all who have replied. I have seen the light, UNI is the way to go - dustless. I also liked the idea of putting just a litlle smear of grease in the intake, to see how much dust/dirt is getting through.
