Default Tire Replacement - New vs Used Decision * pi

All,

I have a delima - about... less than 1/4 inch of tread has worn on my rear tires. Thanks to a railroad spike on the WI Dead Horse Run trail - I need to replace one tire.
The conundrom is whether to replace both rear tires or just the damaged one. Of concern is the difference in diameter of the tire. If its a 1/8th difference on the top and 1/8th difference on the bottom - thats a 1/4 inch diffence. The tire rotation differential will be 3.14 x .25 inches or .785 inches different with each rotation. The smaller tire will be getting draged nearly a inch every time it goes around.

I thought about running slightly more air in the smaller tire and slightly less on the new to match the outside diameters.
I can see where being on sand, dirt, mud, snow etc would have little impact but its not uncommon to ride a few blocks on blacktop to get to/from some trail entrances.

I'm interested in the thoughts of others who have expereince with this.

Only turn in the direction of the smaller tire. Nascar calls it stagger. No really just joking. I cant believe it would make enough of a difference in handling or feel. After a day or two out on the trails it might just even out.
