Default Drive clutch removal ?

I need to remove the drive clutch on my 89 TB. The Haynes book shows the use of a Polaris tool part number 2870506 that needs to be used. It says to insert tool and tap with a hammer. Can you just back out the bolt that holds the clutch a little ways and tap it while pulling on the clutch? Any easy way to remove without buying the tool? Any insights or personal experience in this removal would be welcomed. Thanks
