Since you asked.
Considering the cost of diesel fuel today, cost to upgrade from a gasser and cost of repairs/maintenance (Sparky), I would buy another gasser.
That decision would be based entirely on my use today. If I were towing a heavy load all the time, diesel would be my choice.

When I upgraded from a tent trailer to a 25' travel trailer I figured my 88 F150 was going to struggle. I bought a 92 F350 Crew Cab 4X4 with a 460. I figured my "little" load would be no problem. Trailer weighs about 6K and I put approx 3.5K in the truck. 460 is not impressive at all. Im still looking for a reasonably priced set of headers...if it doesnt pull stronger on hills after adding them Im going to be disgusted. (I have a complete MSD ignition and a open element K&N with a very free flowing exhaust from the cats back now)

Im thinking Dodge for my next truck. Diesel for sure. Might be a while for a couple of reasons though... Im cheap and not having a truck payment buys a lot of gas. Especially since my F350 is my 3rd vehicle and sits unless its time to ride or camp.

It's got about 109,000 on it. And these things have plenty of power to tow. The bad part is that it has enough power to really do some damage to itself. What I mean by that is that you could overload the crap out of it until the frame is dragging and it's still gonna pull. I have to be careful when I'm pulling with it and not drive it like normal. I've towed a 10,000lb skid/trailer combo and have had it up to 80 no problems. I could have had it all the way to the limiter with not problems, but fear and common sense prevented that. There's this one hill I always punch it on once I straighten out (so it doesn't spin) because I just love the way it pulls. I automatically did it once when I had the skid on the back and it roasted the tires for a while, I let off gently. And this thing has the G80 locker in the rear, it was possi.

The thing with this diesel or gas debate is that once you drive one for a while, you don't go back. I love my truck and wouldn't buy another gas one unless it was financial reasons.

I guess you just have to drive one for a while to appreciate it. You know how it is with a Harley, how you feel like "What's the big deal, it's a motorcycle?" then you ride one and you know. I think that's how it is with a diesel truck.

109K and you blew a head gasget? I thought diesels were good for 500K easy? If that happens every 109K it would be crazy. Is that a common problem with the Duramax.

The Gas or Diesel is kind of a long running joke in here. It was brought up quite a while ago and one of the other mods shared his feelings on diesel and Budman has never been the same.

I have driven a few UHauls with the PSD in it and was very impressed. No way will a gas motor pull that hard unless its heavilly modded and would be getting about .5 mpg doing it. I bought my F350 for $3400, gas prices had spiked and no one but me wanted this truck. F350 had 200K but engine and trannie and brakes only had 30K. I looked at a few used diesel trucks and the lowest priced one I could find was a '91 with 275K on the odo. guy was asking $5500.00.

It was really cold one morning. The engine temp just didn't seem to be getting up, even though I warmed up my truck first. Against my better judgement, I put the truck in a gear lower than it should have been, hit tow/haul, and lifted the plow to block all the air flow. Just when I was about to move the plow I heard the resi pop and the temp sky-rocketed and then came back down to normal, the heat was working. All was good, or so I thought. D-maxes are sensitive to sudden extreme temp changes. The heads are aluminum. With the sudden temp changes, it lifts the heads and once that seal is broke your f'd. It's not a normal occurence.

Thats a real bummer Sparky. No fun to have to fix that. How much time you got in the repair job so far? Is it running yet? Do you re-torque diesel heads?

LOL, I'm OK now. I love the smell of diesel smoke in the morning.
A friend of mine bought one of the new Dodge diesel trucks. The exhaust is extremely clean, almost a sweet smell to it. He said it's nearly impossible to do any mods to it. If the exhaust is changed even slightly, it sets off a fault code in the computer.
