Default 400 Scrambler clutch questions

No, I was referring to primary sheaves clearances. I know it's possible that there is a clutch kit installed which would cause the engine to rev higher before engaging; but lets assume that isn't the case. Could the clutch just need cleaning, would the the wear on the sides be that big of a problem? Will it cause premature wear on the belt?

Take a look at the weights on the primary clutch. If they are about the same thickness from below the pin to the tip then they are the S series weights. If they get fat in the middle and taper at the end then they are the 10 series (race) weights and must have the large clutch washer on the clutch bolt instead of the small thick washer. It will push the outer sheave in a little and reduce clearance. If you put the race weights in with the stock clutch washer it will cause a harsh engagement. Hope that helps,Bubba

harsh engagement is what you'll have with more than .020 sheaves clearances,,,
i do run even my stock unit at .010-.015 side to side but that tight
but that the way my setup work best.
i never used shims in the pin weights anyway.

Ok, after running my Scrambler with the clutch cover off to see what is going on; it turns out there is a delay before the primary clutch actually starts pulling inwards when revving the quad. I understand that a stiffer spring would cause this but is there anything else like weights, binding? thanks.

Sounds like you have a stiffer spring installed in the primary. What color is the spring in in now?

It almost looks orange in color. I thought it was just a little old and rusty looking.

if you remove the center bolt on the primary, you can install a washer/shim onto that bolt so it will be on the outside of the primary. this will reduce the sheave to belt clearance. had to do it on my buddies 400 last week. he likes it much better now.

Thanks Xrated, I'll try that today! Hey, I'm heading out that way to ride at my sisters house next weekend. She lives near Earlham. Her neighbor has 40 acres and she has 10. Have you rode any of the public places out there yet?

The bushing in the clutch could be binding too

Do I need to pull the clutch to remove the cover and inspect the spring and bushing? I'm referring to the clutch cover, not the large plastic main cover. Thx.
