Default 400 Scrambler clutch questions

My 400 Scrambler doesn't engage right away and so I started working on the belt. It appeared that the deflection was large so I removed a spacer and there was still too much deflection. I went to the dealer and bought a new belt and it still has the hesitation when I press on the throttle. The engine revs but doesn't engage right away. The dealer said to check the clutch sides to see if they are still straight and it appears to bow in a little at the bottom near the shaft.

Can the clutch be turned flat again or does it have to be replaced? $350 for a clutch is a lot for this problem. Anybody have any suggestions? Running stock springs by the way and I had the driven clutch off and cleaned and check it and it appears to be fine. Thanks.

Did you happen to buy this quad used? If so then the previous owner may have installed a stiffer primary spring causing you to have to give it more gas for the quad to move. This is very common. If you want to you can take the spring out and inspect it. Just take off the the small bolts holding the cover on the primary clutch and then remove the big bolt in the middle. You can then take the spring down to the dealer and match it up with a stock one.

Ok, that I can understand. So, should I not worry that the clutch plate has a slight dip near the belt? What would be a good spring to run to have it engage sooner on throttle yet not loose any top speed?

A polaris white would be a good spring. That's what's in them stock. The groove in the sheaves is from normal wear at lower speeds. The higher the speed the higher into the clutch sheaves it goes I believe. You might want to have the dealer look at it to see if it needs to be serviced.

If you have grooves inthe primary clutch your best bet is EBAY for a good clutch. The wear spot will cause you to have to rev up more to take off.

I've gotten some really good deals on clutches on ebay. Ftwflh is right. If it's grooved really really bad it could cause this too.

Yeah, I'm watching a couple of clutches now, but I don't know their true condition. Will the groove in the sheaves cause the belt to wear fast? I can live with the way it revs before it takes off in low for now while I watch for a good clutch.

are you meaning the spark plug gaping?
well with HPD suggestions at 2 degrees retarded timing at 21.5,
you gap the plug around .018 or .020,,at stock timng should be around
.025+ i guess, but that doesn't do nothing on your quad with stock trimed
setup...
