04 700 sportsman carb jet question,,
hello from huntsville, ala. 41 yr old newbie,
i have a carb jetting question for ya'll out there. i just put on a k/n filter and aftermarket exhaust on my 700, i'm reading around and hearing that i need to go bigger on my main and pilot jets on my mikuni. as now i may be running lean and not getting all the power that i should expect...
has anyone had to do this or tooled around with thier carb.? any help or ideas here would be great , thanks for your time, joe

Hey Joe. If you contact the folks that made your exhaust they might be able to help with jet sizes for your application.
Try a search in the Polaris section. Keywords like "jetting", "running lean" or "aftermarket exhaust" will get you so much information you will be an expert in no time.
Access to the carb is no problem, remove the air box, the metal brace and a few hoses and you can change anything you want without even disconnecting the choke or throttle cables.

Just make sure you use a GOOD philips screw driver for the bowl screws. I think the screws are made of recycled Blatzs cans,, the sure strip easy.

I have a 700 sportsman and when riding in Utah above 7000 ft it bogs on take off. In other words it doesn't have the throttle response from an idle. I was thinking that changing the main jet would affect the top end, changing the needle position would affect the top and mid-range but I am not sure what affects the 500 RPM just above idle. Is there a jet that only works that range? It seems that the idle mixture wouldn't really affect the mixture 500 RPMs above an idle.

i see your from cali and riding in utah, is there much of an altitude diff there.? i don't know your yr of 700 but non-efi models are affected by weather and altitude.
from my research and all you need to be looking into your pilot jet, not main or needles for your particular issue. the pilot affects the parameters from idle to 1/4 before the main gets involved, needle beyond that.
for starters actuate your choke cable while it's running just above idle to hear if it affects the change in rpm any to insure that the choke is not hung in any position.
