I just picked up a 350 sportsman 4x4. I can pull start it. How do I remove the starter? The solenoid just clicks. I tried jumping the startter directly, with no results.

thanks

Most likely it just needs starter brushes.

Yes you can start it with the pull rope.

How do I pull the startter to replace the brushes? Do I take it apart while it mounted?

Turn off the gas.

Stand it up on the back rack.

Remove the skid plate.

Remove the right side cover.

There are two bolts under the cover that hold the starter on.

There is also a bracket on the other end of the starter. It is a pain to get to but you can do it.

Take the starter apart and look at the brushes and the bearing in the nose.

Replace what is worn.

If the armature is rough you can turn it down.

You can mount the armature in a drill and use a file to slick it up.

Thanks for the help - that did it - brushes were shot and starter drive (spur gear) was frozen up
