Sportsman starter repair
#1
Hi Guy's, my buddie has a 2002 sportsman 400, and he is having a couple of problems. First the starter makes a spinning noise but does not engage, I assume the starter clutch/drive is bad, is its possible to remove clean grease and reasemble or does he have to buy a new starter and drive? Second he has a real hard time getting it into gear, not certain if its forward or reverse but is that usually and adjustment? He does not have much cash so I am looking for the least expensive fix to make it through the winter as his wife is pregnant and she has to plow his driveway with this when it snows.
Thanks for your help.

All I can say is WOW! You Slowaris guy's are really helpful! I have never not received a reply on a question on the Kawasaki, Suzuki or Honda forums.
I cannot believe the lack of help, you guy's are great.

Starter drive bendix is separate from starter motor and can be bought separately. On my 2-smoke 400 you just remove recoil, flywheel and its right there.Never worked on 4-stroke though. My first post ,couldn't have ya callin down the "P" boys!

you should only have to remove starter, disassemble, clean and lube gear sparingly. there is not much room to get to the bottom starter bolt but there is enough. do not forget to put bottom bolt through starter before reassembly.
