transmission linkage trouble or more?
#1
I just purchased a 1997 Polaris 4x2 425 Maganum automatic. I picked it up fro $500 . Everything is sound on the machine except for the transmission. I cannot get the shifter linkage adjusted correctly. I can get it into neutral and reverse but I play He$% trying to get it into High and low gears. I've looked and looked on the internet but I really couldn't find anything. Any help here would be great!

Check the "bellcrancks" on the tranny where the rods hook on to.They get stripped out and all you can do is replace them.

To adjust the linkage put it in netural. Make sure the linkage is tight where it bolts to the trans and shifter.
Loosen the two nuts on the high and reverse linkage.
Turn the linkage all the way in one direction untill it starts putting pressure on the trans. Now turn it all the way in the other direction untill it starts putting pressure on the trans.
Turn it back to the exact middle and you now have the correct adjustment.
If it still will not go into high you either have a bad shifter, which is rare but it does happen, or a problem with your trans.
If your trans has a problem don't get too worried. They are very simple to work on. Sometimes it is just the shift fork that is worn out. The fork will wear out if the linkage is not adjusted correctly.
