take the bowl off the carb and check the float make sure its not sticking open. If you dont feel like doing that just hit the bowl of the carb a couple times lightly with the tool of your choice.

your bowl in the card may be stuck and the gas is coming from the overflow.

I guess that's a sign of age if you've done that and know that it works. Since we may be dealing witha younger crowd, metric or standard, doesn't matter.

could an amatuer mechanic like me fix this without any new parts. is that possible? i will also try to hit the carb bowl with something. every one that has looked at this said that they dont think the floats are sticking. but no one seems to know for sure.

you will never believe this. after it sat for five days, had two people look at the carb, and i worried about how much money this was gonna cost, this is crazy.
total $2.50
i tapped the bowl of the carb w/ a ratchet and put in a new plug. stopped leaking and fired right up. simple but crazy weird. glad nothin was expensive. thanks for the help guys. espically you 'storj' it was your idea that got me goin. thanks, kenny.

It may be fixed for now but it will happen again. There is a reason why it happened. You have some age to your quad and the carb needs to be rebuilt. The float was stuck and thats why it came out of the vent hose. You can easily rebuild the carb. It is cheap maintenance but can be a very expensive fix if let go.
