Is it just me, or does it seem like the stock 05 Predator is missing a gear between 1st and 2nd?

I just got back from my first trip at Glamis and it was second gear the whole time while surfing. I'd start off in 1st and have to hit 2nd with the revs high in order to do anything. and if I tried 3rd unless I was tacted out I'd have to down shift to second.

I started up olds in second with the thought to get the rpm's up as I came out of the whoops but only got about 3/4 the way up. I could have down shifted but I figured it was my first try so I peeled off.

Why is 1st gear so short? Is there a way to close this gap in power?

 

Get either a bolt on or Rath air cleaner + exhaust pipe and you will be going up Olds in 3ed gear all the way. I run the duns in third and forth gear all day on my 05 TLD

 

I figured if I changed that stuff I wouldnt have a problem, its just the cash flow is slightly disrupted in the mean time. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif[/img]

I saw an 06 TLD fly up the wall in 3rd. My buddy took my bike up the Wall and Olds so that I at least knew the bike was capable. Now I just have to learn to do it myself. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif[/img]

 

Play with your sprockets,that might help and it's cheeper.

 

I heard increasing the size of the front would help??

 

Well it would make the gears longer,but you may have a harder time climbing up in 5th.

 

With a completely unmoddified bike wouldnt get up be the first priority? [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif[/img] I got about 3/4 the way up and my revs were dropping fast so instead of downshifting to my non existent 1st gear I made the desicion to turn around. I dont know if I wasnt going fast enough out of the whoops or what. I thought about hitting 3rd at full throttle but didnt want to have to downshift. was hopping 2nd would take me all the way.

 

Never duned per say..but dont those meaty razr tires suck in the sand?..My I razr's are just ok in the local hill cliimb..and my ITP XC on the Warrior just plain suck...

 

I'm having a hard time understanding that your Predators can;t make it up Old in 1st or 2nd gear? Are you using paddles? The first thing you need to do is get a pipe, and regear it. Get a 13T for the front or go up 2 teeth in the back. A good used slip on can be had for around $100 - 150. Then, open up the airbox - or go buy a clamp on twinair foam filter from HPD or nicholas racing. These 3 simple mods will get you up Olds in 3rd gear at least part way, then 2nd the rest.

 

Im running 22 Kenda dunerunners in the front and 21 kenda gecko's on the front. I only went up an inch front and back from stock.

Again, my buddy was able to get my bike up, but he has been riding for 30 years and had a better idea of what gear at what speed at what RPM's he should have been at. He new how to deal with my bikes short comings. I am trying to improve those short comings so that I can do it myself without the 30 years experience.
