Default 1998 sportsman 500 vs 2005 sportsman 500ho

I went riding with some friends his weekend. One has a 1998 sportsman 500 non ho. This thing has been put through the ringer, and still runs strong. It is stock, and my question is what is the difference in the clutching on the older sportsmans as opposed to the newer ones? We had a drag race, and that thing hung right there with my ho till about 30 to 40mph. Then on top end it was all 500ho. I have the epi clutch kit with the red spring. I was expecting more out of my ho than that, however, I think I might switch out the primary spring, with either the factory blue/green or epi's maroon. What do ya'll think?

His 98 500 is Non-ebs right? If it is that explains the good take off. The Non-ebs primary starts at a smaller ratio and gives it good take off.
