00 Sportsman Problems!
#1
Hi, I'm new to the forum, but not new to riding.
I purchased a repo 2000 sportsman 500 RSE
It came with a few problems, some which I have fixed.
I need help with the following problems!
I purchased a used drive clutch (EBS) to replace the busted one. Now when running, the atv will not idle, but wants to just run in gear at idle speed, if I push the brakes it will stop, but the engine will die too.
It has a dayco belt and both clutches appear to be working correctly. Any ideas???
Also, one of the hilliard clutches was rusted due to water in the hub, I cleaned it up, changed the bearings and fluid and it appears to be working ok--I removed the hub and activitated the awd and it spins and goes in and out. The magnet appears to be working too, but when I put it back together, the hub will start to spin, but I can stop it with my hand. Any ideas on what could be the problem??
Last, there appears to be a coolant leak on the bottom of the engine at the water pump housing. The repair manual states I need to pull the engine to replace the seals. Is this the way to go??
Thanks for any help!!!
Joe

I also have a 2000 sportsman 500, and have done lots of work on it. have you looked at the alignment of your clutches, when i bought mine bike (used) i put a new polaris belt on it and the same thing happened(bike walking ahead at idle in gear) so i lined up my cluthes and they were a half of an inch out of specs. At the same time I found out that because of the clutch so out of wack, the belt actually wore a grove in the inner sheeve of the clutch. So I needed a new clutch, At the time my local polaris dealer had a sale on ,buy a new primary clutch and get a new secondary and belt free, so all that made a world of a difference in performance
