TOP 100 THINGS NOT TO DO WITH AN ATV
#41
dont buy a used quad and go right out riding... some people don't keep up on inspection... when i bought my 400L it had no oil in the counterbalance... and the oil in the rear gear box was super old....

oh yeah and when something breaks... make sure you know what broke it.... i did a rebuild on my 400 engine and after a new piston, rings and everything else i looked around for the cause of the damage... this leads into a long story about a hole in my cooling system, and about $200 more in parts and repair. luckily i didn't go out riding before i found the cause of my first problem. otherwise i would have had a second engine rebuild to do...

When you spend $18 bucks for an oil filter, $20 bucks for oil, and 20 minutes to do an oil change, and then trailer it for 3 hours on not so smooth roads to cottage country, don't scratch your head wondering why you have gas in the the crankcase when you have forgot to turn the fuel off.

Never stick anything bigger than your atv in your ear.

Well I remember my second grade teacher saying that anyway, but that was 20 years ago. Now my daughter is in second grade, maybe I'll ask her.
Seriously one thing that I wouldn't do is make a habit of poor maintainance. And although you may not need to check it over every time, you do need to check it top to bottom every few rides and the old once over should be good enough each time.

Yes, I would never do that (OOPS 1). Never ride with only your front left a-arm skid plate. It causes your quad to become unbalanced and flip. You can see by the picture that it flipped in the direction of the side with the greater weight. If you install the rest of the skid plates, it should balance out and prevent this in the future.
