02 700, Tranny engagement question
Need some advice. When the machine is running, and I shift into Low, High, or Reverse, it feels like the transmission doesn't engage until I rev up the machine. Then it "pops" into gear and away I go. If I slow down to a stop, the machine is still in gear, and you can accelerate smoothly.
My DAD has a 96 xplorer, and when I shift his machine from neutral into gear, you can feel the machine pop into gear at engine idle RPM, then the machine accelerates smoothly when you give it gas.
I have 1400 miles, and I have less than 100 miles on a new belt.
Is this normal? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I bought it used. It had 1000 miles on it when I bought it.
I am almost positive that when I move the shifter, it doesn't go into gear until the revs increase slightly. It doesn't take much of an increase in RPM to get it into gear.
When any of my buddies jump on my machine, they throw it into gear, then hit the throttle. That is when it clunks. Whenever I ride it, I will throw it into gear, then give it a little gas, until I hear it pop into gear.
I will check the shifter adjustment this week.
I am not that familiar with clutches, shouldn't the machine be in gear when I shift the gear lever? If I had a higher engagement spring in the primary, wouldn't that mean it would take a little more RPM for the belt to engage? Once this thing is in gear, I can come to a complete stop, and it id still in gear. If I shut the engine off in gear, then start it back up I do not have this problem.
BTW - I was checking out your home page a while ago. You have done some nice work to that machine. I am amazed that you can do a wheelie in high. The only way I could do a wheelie in high, is if I started at the edge of a ditch.
Thanks for the response.

yep if it was the clutch spring it would do it all the time from a stop.
I agree with sp70003.
What makes you think i can do a wheelie in high? I have said before its easy in low with my mods but not yet abtainalbe in high. That would be sporstsman70003's ride!
thanks for the compliments anyways,
Jim

I finally got around to adjusting the shifter linkage. Made no difference when I adjusted the shifter, as to what position the gear the selector was in, the quad was not 'in gear', until the throttle was revved slightly, then it would clunk into gear, and stay in gear.
A side question, if the shifter is out of adjustment, would affect only forward or reverse, or can it affect both?
