Default Modifying Stock Muffler

I have been reading that many people are modifying their sock mufflers by drilling out the baffles. I currently have a sportsman 500 non HO and would like to possibly modify the stock muffler, but I do not want to loose any low end torque. I currently have a K&N and 29.5 outlaws. Would drilling out the baffles in the muffler help or hurt my performance? If it would help my performance would someone please instruct me step by step to correctly perform the modification. I plan on welding on a 1 ¾ turn down once the muffler has been modified.

If you have the $$$$ for that big of tires then why dont you get a decent pipe? And how do you turn them without a clutch kit?

Leave it alone.

After you ruin your stock muffler your ATV will sound and run like a POS and then you will just have to go to your local dealer and buy a new mufler.

And it will not be cheap.

Check out Heelclicker for a clutch kit or call them and tell them what you got and they can get you hooked up.These 500HOs have a good exhaust system. The power is hidden in the Polaris clutching. But is you must mess with the pipe go with either a complete HPD or Aaen system with the clutching they recomend. But for best $$$ do check out Heelclicker.

By removing the baffles, you are reducing the restriction of the exhaust system. That allows for greater air flow, resulting in a better top end. Thus, bottom end will suffer somewhat.
