I have a 2004 sportsman 500 and when in two wheel drive if i gouge on it it kicks it self in 4x4. So now its not as fun playing in the snow. Does anyone have the answer.

 

AWD switch off? AWD shorting out somewhere? ? Just my 2 cents.

 

the new 4x4 system they put in ,in 04.5 is bad for that,my two brothers have had new front ends put in there bikes through warrenty and they still do it.its a poor system if you ask me.mine is a 04 and it was the old hub style 4x4 and it works great.My dealer told me to go with it instead,i could have got either.

 

With the Hilliard front diffs, you have to keep fresh fluid in it. As soon as you start having AWD engagement problems, change the fluid with the Polaris recommended front diff oil or if fresh check it for proper level or contamninates.

If your AWD kicks in while your wheels are spinning you can damage the roller cage. ($200 for the part and $300 for labor) The AWD should not kick in with the switch off.
