Default Cheaper oil change

I went to NAPA today and got an oil change for $15.47 2 quarts of 5w-50 Castrol sytn. ($4.19) and a Napa gold filter 1357 ($7.09). That beats the stealer price buy about $12.00.

And you got a MUCH better oil.

And when it is time to change your trans oil use the Castrol 5w50 Syntec also.

It is much better than the expensive crap Polaris wants you to buy.

Question?? Why did you go with 5-50 and not stay with the 0-40?

0-40 is not needed unless you ride in sub 0 temps on a regular basis.

5w50 is better for average temps.

How did you come to that conclusion? If the engine was designed for 0-40 ... then 5-50 maybe to heavy and reduce oil flow on startup and during riding, by not allowing enough oil to return to the oil tank for the pickup.

By all means do not use anything but the EXACT thing Polaris wants you to use.

Make sure you only use Polaris air in your tires. Gas station air does not have the correct weight so in reality when your air guage says 4lbs it could be 8lbs.

And always remember your dealer only cares about YOU. He is not there to make a profit.

He would NEVER lie to you.

If he tells you must use Polaris grease on your tie rod ends then you must do so.

I didn't say only use Polaris oil ... just the same rating and weight.

If you live in an area where the temps are very cold year round then a 0-40 would be nice.

Those of us who do not are better served by 5w50.

Polaris reccomends a 0-40 because it works for ALL temps that the ATV may be used but that does not mean 0-40 is the best for ALL temps.

That also does not mean that the engine was "designed" for 0-40.

If you live in the tropics where the temps are always over 100 degrees a 5w50 or even a 20w50 would serve you much better than a 0-40.

From the Manual:

MAINTENANCE AND LUBRICATION
Premium 4 Synthetic Lubricant
Polaris Premium 4 All Season synthetic engine oil has been specially
formulated for use in Polaris 4-cycle engines. It’s a fully synthetic,
high performance, multi-viscosity oil designed to provide the ultimate
in lubrication performance and protection. NOTE: See page 121 for the
part numbers of Polaris products.
Premium 4 possesses unsurpassed film strength over the widest
possible temperature range. It resists viscosity and frictional
breakdown in ambient temperatures from -40° F. to 120° F. (-40 to
+49° C.) Its exceptional frictional properties result in more efficient
operation, more power output and lower fuel consumption.
Although Polaris Premium 4 is the only oil recommended for use in
this engine, use of any API certified SH oil is allowable as long as it’s
0W-40. Oil may need to be changed more frequently if Polaris
Premium 4 is not used. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations
for ambient temperature operation.
CAUTION
Mixing brands or using a non-recommended oil may cause
serious engine damage. We recommend the use of Polaris
Premium 4 synthetic Oil or another 0W-40 API certified SH oil.
Never substitute or mix oil brands.

Clearly they state you can use any other 0W-40 API certified SH oil ... and it sure looks like the engine was designed for 0W-40 oil. Its america ... you can do anything you want ... i just want to know how you came to the statement that 5W-50 is better for higher temps?
