I just got a 700 vtwin. Is the rear toolbox supposed to be water tight?

 

no just the front

 

The one on my 05 800 leaks also. There is a seal of some type in the groove and I'm thinking about doubling up on it. Pete

 

the experince i have had with my sp800 is that neither the front or rear boxes are water tight the rear box is made up of 2 pieces a top and a bottom i guess you could remove it and seal the 2 halfs. the front rack also has the bolts that hold the rack on that water seeps through and i think water pusshes throught the rubber groments in the bottom if you are deep enough in the water. I have found this out the hard way the first ride with the new toy all my stuff in the front box was water damaged.

 

I had the same on My 05 500 HO. I took out the rubber seal on the front storage box. Then I bought some black rubber silicone sealant compound from Menards and put a small bead inside the groove. Let set and cure overnight and put back the rubber seal. In addition I put a bead of sealant around the mounting bolts and caps that cover the struts mounting bolts. THis has work so far. The sealant removes very easly if you have to get to the mounting bolts for the box or the struts.

would it be easier just to get some type of waterproof bag than trying to make the box watertight?

 

Thanks for the help. I think I'll seal it up and also use some zip loc bags to keep stuff dry. I have a rear bag (polaris) it says it's water resistant, I was thinking of treating it with something to make it shed water beter.

 

Here’s what I did to seal our rear tool boxes. Start with a clean dry box. Get a tube of GOOD clear 100% silicone caulk and a rubber glove. Put the rubber glove on your dominant hand and squirt a big glob of caulk into it. Now smear that caulk all around the inside of the box where the top and bottom halves join. The more handfuls you apply the better the seal will be. Let it cure and reload your stuff (in waterproof containers).

 

Duct tape all the seems on the inside and you will stop 90% of the water.Also tape the radiatorcover and the shock tower caps inside the front box and you will be amazed at how dry it will stay. Simple and cheap.
