not to steel your thread but I think i have the same problem on my 2000 400 scrambler. It seems there is about a 1 inch play in the sterring column when you turn the bars back and forth. Do i just tighten the big nut on the bottom of the sterring column to fix this?

I don't think It's going to be that easy...Sounds to me like we might have to put in a new bottom steering stem bushing.{The stock setup sure is poor} I think I might call hpd or Rick"RCR" and find out how much they are..fun.....fun....

Been there, done that. It's a very popular problem with 2000 Scramblers. I replaced both the upper and lower steering bushings. The steering is a bit tight for a while after they're installed, but they'll break in soon enough. You will think you have a new machine.
I had a local shop do my lower bushing, because I didn't have access to a 90 degree drill/dremel, and I didn't feel like disassembling the quad. With enough patience, it's something that can be done at home though...
