Default Fixing a front CV joint?

I sure need a little help here. The patient is a '93 TrailBoss 350L 4X4.
the problem is the right front CV joint. First the A-arm dropped down, the stearing ball broke and the sheel on the shock/strut completely had a mind of it's own. At this point the splined end of the drive shaft going into the CV joint (at the back of the strut) came out. the boot had apparently split a bit ago, because it is messy in the CV joint, mostly with grass as far as I can tell. I don't have it disassembled yet. How do you think I should proceed?
The spoined end can go right back into the joint, but I know I have to clean it good and regrease it. I have the boot kit already. But there must be more to it than just sliding it back in.... any axle timing isues to be concerned with? How best to clean this up and make sure it's right?
Thanks for any help!
