ATV Tire Chains
#1
Anybody have an opinion on tire chains for ATV rear tires. I wondered if they tear up the pavement at all, or if that is a concern? Also, 2 or 4 link spacing - is one better than the other? What does 'V-Bar' refer to when it comes to chains? I would be primarily be using these for plowing traction on the rear tires, not for ice traction on lakes. Thanks

Tire chains are going to limit you to slow speeds. If you ever spin one loose you’re going to shred plastic (or even metal) in a heartbeat. If all you’re doing is slow snow pushing and you’re careful you’d probably be alright. ATVs are light enough that if you don’t spin your tires you shouldn’t damage “pavement.” Asphalt is softer than concrete so it depends on what pavement material you’re on. V-bar is an extra V shaped piece of metal that can be welded on the cross chains. It gives the traction chains a taller profile, longer life and better traction.
I had chains on all four rear wheels of a 2000 Sportsman 6x6 one winter. It had great traction in the deep snow but steering sucked.

Thanks for the insight Floodrunner. I don't necessarily need the chains, but I have had some intermittent issues with my 4WD quiting that I haven't been able to completely rectify. And as I am sure you know, if the front wheels aren't there, it's hard to move much snow. So I thought some chains on the rear wheels would be a nice backup if the 4wd does quit.
