Default 02 Polaris Sportsman 500 Drive Belt

I have a 02 Polaris 500 HO with 100 hours and everything seems to be fine on the drive belt. It seems to have plenty of power still but from what I have been reading its best to change the belt to keep top performance. How often should the drive belt be changed? If i was to not change the belt should i be carrying another belt with me in case the old one finally fails on me?

What tools does it take to take the drive belt off and replace it if your stuck in the woods 100 miles from the truck?

You still have alot of time left on the belt. Some have over 1000 miles and even more. Depending on how hard you ride it. Not sure on hours though. The belt is easy to change. All you need is a 3/8 drive ratchet, 10mm socket, long extension and phillips screw driver. I carry an extra but of all the years I have never had to change it but my friends 700 broke with 2300 miles on it. We were about 15miles out and he used my belt to get it back.

I have read that dayco belts are better than polaris is this true? Does dayco offer lifetime warrenty to? and also which belt do i need from dayco. I searched on there site and i came up with this.

HP2002 this a standard belt? how do i get the high performance belt?

http://www.mvreader.com/cgi-bin/mult...wCatalog=1&l=n

Mine is a 02 Sportsman 500 HO with ebs

On purepolaris.com the way it reads all ebs are the same and all non ebs are the same but on dacyco the 500 with esb says hp2002 and 600 with ebs says hp2004?

Would it be HPX2002 for the High Performance Extreme version? or would it be a diffrent number?

on my 02 500 i had my stock belt shrink from going though alot of water hot. i replaced mine w/ a 700 top cog belt for better cooling and never had a problem after. as far as daco belts not sure on atvs but when i was racing my sled it was slower then a polaris belt because there not true to size.

How hard is it to take the cover off so you can get in there to blow it out? You have to take off other stuff? How much time would i be looking at to take it off? I probably have dry dirt in there from mud holes i been in. Iv got my belt wet before but i just put it in neutral and revved it up and dried it.

its not hard to take the cover off and change the belt. i have a 500 h.o. also and put dayco hp belt on it. i ride a lot of mud and hills. the big plus i noticed is i dont have to put it in low as much as i did when i had a stock belt on it.

I won't worry to much right now if you dont ride to rough. If you ever smoked it I would suggest you change it. I noticed after I smoked mine that at high speeds it was like it was phazeing in and out (slipping) ,dealer replaced it free. You might want to check with a dealer and see if its still covered. Some dealers like mine will replaced it as long as you own it and most just give you 1 time replacment.
