Changing a spark plug?
#1
I have a 2006 500 EFI and I can't get to the spark plug with the tool kit that came with my quad. I removed the side panels with no luck. I called the dealer and he said it's very hard to get to the spark plug. He said they remove the gas tank to get to it. WHAT! They wan't 3 hr min for labor! Why include a spark plug wrench with your tool kit if you can't change your own spark plug. Does anyone have any ideas. Maybe I'm missing something here. If it was a ratchet type wrench I think I could get it out. Also they say to torq it to 14 lbs. How do you do that? I can't believe this. Please help.

My 04 sportsman is tough but i did it with the wrench supplied. I think i did it like this, break it loose then remove the wrench and finish it with your fingers. Otherwise is the wrench raises up it gets jammed in the tank and frame. I did not remove the tank to do it. once i figured it out it took 5 minutes.
Try an oil change! now thats a pain in the nards.

You can get them out without removing the gas tank. Get a spark plug socket with the nut on the end and use a ratchet wrench on the nut. But the hardest thing to do is not let any dirt that is around the plug fall into the cylinder. 14lbs is a quarter turn past finger tight. That is as close as I can explain it .

I'm not sure, but if I break the plug loose, I don't think you can grab the plug. It's recessed into the head. When you unscrew the plug, does it rise up enough to grab it? Thanks for all your help...

If you have a piece of old fuel line or some type of hose with a little smaller diameter as the top of the spark plug, then you can drop the hose down and the end of the spark plug will go in the line and you can pull it out. You can also put your plug in this way too. Just make sure you get the plug started right and don't get it crossthreaded.

The first (and last) time I tried changing my plugs, I think I said every curse word I knew. My big clumsy paws just don't fit in that tight of spaces. I managed to change them, but after that experience, NEVER again!!!!!!!! Then to top it off, the old ones looked fine anyway!

I was looking at my predator, and it's going to be difficult to change the plug in it also . Looks like I'll have to remove the gas tank on it also. Not something I would want to do on a trail in the woods.
