what size truck bed? 05' 400 sportsman
If new job works out I am looking into getting rid of my commuter car and getting a full size p-u truck. Wondering what size truck bed I need to fit my 2005 400 sportsman in. I assume it will not fit in the 5.5 foot bed of the super crew's but will it fit in the 6.5 beds? Will the gate close?
Also have to fit in wife and 3 kids so standard cab is out of the question.
thanks,
D

I have a dodge 6 1/4 foot bed, and with my 05 I have to leave the tailgate down. With my 04, I have to have it even further out onto the tailgate because of the brushguard.
My bed is 6'3". With a 6.5 foot bed, maybe. Two inches might do it. If it did fit, it would be close. But with a bumper, winch, or bigger tires you'd have problems. I think anything shorter than a true 8 foot long bed would be iffy.

I have an 05 sp500. I also have an 04 gmc ext. cab with a 6ft bed, and an 05 gmc crew cab with a 5.5ft bed. Now, with the 6ft bed the sportsman will fit with the tailgate shut unless you have a brushguard. If you in fact do have a brush guard, you'll have to put the wheeler on backwards with the front facing the back of the truck, then put a 2x4 under each front tire to get the front up enough for the gate to close. DO NOT drive it on forwards or it can go through the back glass. If you back it on, the rear wheels will hit the back of the cab and stop the wheeler from hitting the class, as the rear wheels stick out further than the rear rack. On the 5.5ft bed the gate will not shut under any condition, but the wheeler only sits on about 2-4 inches of the tailgate (not much). Either way, I highly reccomend backing the sportsmans onto a pickup because of the safety of it not hitting the back window. All other quad manufactures have their rear rack sticking out further than the rear wheels, so it doesn't matter, but the sportsman is different. If you want a crew cab it will fit nicely, no worries!
Note: this is all considering no toolbox is involved!
