fixed the phoenix cold start and backfiring
#1
well i figured out why the phoenix backfires and wont idle when its cold. just take the cover off the throttle box and check out the slop in the thumb throttle shaft. so sloppy it keeps hitting the etc switch off and on at lower speeds. no adjustment for switch so just remove the etc switch and the phoenix will run smoother and start when its cold. the best part is no more backfiring due to the ignition being shunted and unshunted allowing unburned fuel into the exhaust to accumalate and then explode out the muffler. if somebody would make a repair bushing for that shaft to make it rotate true they would make some money.

OK, I took out the ETC switch, and the backfiring stopped. But, what is this thing supposed to actually do? I read teh manual, but it doesn't say how it is supposed to help if the throttle cable gets stuck.
Is there somewhere I can look for a full recall list on teh 2005 Phoenix. Nothing on the Polaris site, that would be crazy for them. I just want to make sure my dealer did them all. I doubt any of it was done.

the etc switch stands for electronic throttle control. if you push your throttle and release it and the cable is not tight at the throttle it will push the switch. your reverse is working fine .you have to push the override button to give it more throttle. the reverse is governed for safety so you do not back up too fast.

Stevodee, that is how mine works too. Looks like the 2005 had some engagement problems. Supposedly, it goes away after a few weeks. I have to rev it up , then it engages.
As far as the ETC, is there a good way to adjust this out? I see there are a few pieces of sheet metal brackets the throttle housing, maybe there is a way to adjust it with the locnut that is there?

SOme of the Phoenixs were shipped with a heavy oil in the transmissions. this make them a little harder to get into gear, but it still seems to need to be rocked, or reved into gear. As far as the ETC, you can bend the tab that engages it a little and it will work correctly. You want to bend the tab in the throttle housing away from the micro switch a little.

Thanks, the bending of the tab was easier than taking it out and hiding it somewhere. We do alot of slow riding, so that would be annoying every couple of minutes. My neighbor has one and gets horrible mileage compared to a Honda 250EX. Thats probably the un-burned gas going out the pipe.
