Default Speedo jumping everywhere?

I have a problem with my speedo needle "jumping" all over the place even while I'm sitting still with just the ignition on. I did a "search" to see if this problem has already been addressed and the one topic on it said that it might be the speed sensor on the left front wheel . Is this the case even with the machine not running and just the ingnition on? Or is it something else? Also isn't there a way to "set" the speedo to become a tach for diagnostic reasons? I have a 2002 500H.O. sportsman.

Default Speedo jumping everywhere?

one time i turned my key on and i was going 50 mph while i was sittin in the garage. i put 3 miles on it at the same time too!! yes it was my speedo sensor on the right front wheel. i am on my third one now. it happens about every 1500 to 2000 miles. make sure when you change it the needle is not up at a high speed cuz when you put a new sensor in you have to go faster than what the needle is on to reset itself and if its up around 60 mph well that can be fun.

My 2002 500HO did the same thing-and still does it. the useless dealer replaced the whole speedo unit and it worked for a day or 2 and then it screwed up and has been acting weird for 2 years. Thanks for the advice about changing the sensor and resetting it-i will definitely give it a try. Would the sensor being bad effect anything else? does it have anything to do with the 4wd?

The speed sensor does affect the 4wd.
