Default SP 600 Carb troubles

Hey guys,

Cool site. And alot of good info to. I was searching for my problem but didn't have much success.

I've got a SP 600 its a 2004. I've put around 800 miles on it with out any problems. This last time I had it out with my buddies I had problems getting over 30. It would run just fine up to about 30. But if I gave it use a little more gas it would start to sputter and bog down. So heres what I did. I pulled the plugs and they were carboned up. But not fouled. Just black. I cleaned them up with ether because I didn't have another set. Shame on me. I put it all back together but didn't have any better results. Since my buddies were in the great white northern Michigan for a club ride I just nursed for the weekend. By the end of the weekend I could get it up to about 50 but if I tried 51 it would bog down again. But at any speed before that it would be perfect.

So when I got it home I was going to change the filter, and clean out the carb. I cut open the filter to see if there was any crud and it was fine. I ran the quad and sprayed a can of carb cleaner though it. Its much better now. But I've pulled the plugs again and after the weekends 120 mile ride theyre carboned up again.

Has anyone had these problems. I figure I would like to rejet alittle leaner. But has anyone had to because of this problem?

I would also like to clean out the carb but for the life of me cant figure out how to disconnect the choke and throttle cables. One last thing. I noticed the breather hose from the bottom of the carb was disconnected. Where does the end of the hose go to, or does it just dangle.

I know I'm winded but I appreciate any help. Have a great night and happy easter.

Jeff

the end of the hose dangles. hey i have a 330 trailboss. in my owners manual it says to remove a plug (bolt) on the silencer (muffler) and to start the motor and to rev the motor to expell carbon that accumulates in the muffler.

hey you think it can be old stale fuel huh? put fresh new fuel in it. drain the old stuff if its old. when atv is stored put fuel stabalizer in the fuel to keep it fresh. if your fuel filter was clean when you opened her up it still doesnt indicated that something is not clogging up the fuel jet in your carburetor. or even it can be that the diaphrams in your fuel pump are tired and worn and need to be replaced. does it not seem like a fuel delivery problem huh? i believe also that the fuel tank has a one way air check valve. the purpose of the one way check valve at the fuel tank is for air to be replaced by the fuel that is being consumed. in other words the fuel is replaced by air. so if this air check valve is clogged the fuel pump and carburetor will be like trying to suck a basketball through a garden hose which would be quite impossible. there's just so many things that can be giving you this problem that you have to check everything.

To get the choke cable off just unscrew the brass colored nut that threads into the carb and pull the cable out. Then for the throttle cable take the three screws out of the plate on the side of the carb then take some slake out of the cable and pop the end pin on the cable out of the linkage. Check that the float level is right and that the needle valve is working properly. I chased a bog on my 500 and came to the conclusion it was jetted too rich. I lifted the clip on the needle 2 notches and it worked much better and in the end put the clip back and dropped two main jet sizes. Plug burns clean now and the bike runs much crisper.....

Also check the end of the carb breather tube. It runs up the back side of the fuel tank where the tank and the front part of the seat slide together. Sometimes that tube can get pinched or the end can get smothered in the foam padding on the tank and cause problems.

I thought about alot on the gas thing. I loosened the cap when it was bogging down. Kind of like an outboard when you for get to open the vent. I spent a few times pulling my guts out for that problem in the middle of a river. But the gas was fresh, and I had put stabil in it. I put it in for all my tanks regardless of when I expect to use it.

What Jet sizes are you running? I would assume mine are 157.5 which are stock but no guarantees on that. I think something was just gummed up alittle because after the carb cleaner it was back to its old self. I do need to put in a new set of plugs, and test to see if I need to rejet.

Nah, I doubt the exhaust is clogged, or clogged enough to cause a problem. I sprayed a can of carb cleaner in it while is it was running. That seemed to do the trick. I can go from idle to flat out with no hesitation or bogging now. I am concerned though about how carboned up my plugs are. I may drop the main jet down one size and see how the plugs look and go from there.

Thanks for all the help guys.
