My 400 Scrambler is making a rattling clunky sound around the pullstarter. It doesn't sound normal. The pull starter still works so I don't think anything broke off inside. Any ideas what the noise would be from?

Remove the pull starter and check to see if there is anything keeping the cogs from going all the way back in. =] just my .02¢

 

have you checked your counterbalance lately. is this noise at idle or when when you get on the throttle?

 

Oh man THANKS! After your suggestion I checked my counter balance oil and my dipstick is missing!!!

 

Ok, I added oil and the noise is gone but now I have to order the dipstick because it otherwise I'll loose my oil again. Anybody know the size of the thred?

 

my 400 sportsman rattles near the pull starter area...

 

Yeah, every 400 I've seen has a slight rattle but this was amost a grinding noise. I'm glad I checked the couterbalance oil.

 

i hope you didnt get a bunch of dirt down there
