Default trailboss idle and backfire problems

Hi, I bought my daughter a 1991 250 trailboss so she can ride with me on occasion. It was blown up (cracked piston) when i got it but i know it ran perfectly before it's demise. I honed the cylinder and replaced the piston. It has lots of compression and starts right up but the idle never wants to stay steady and when decellerating it will often backfire vioently out of the exhaust... I have the cable slack correct and have tried the air and idle screws in nearly every possible position. It has 3 clear lines on the carb that are not hooked up to anything as i have no idea where they belong. Any help would be appreciated

I would think the backfire is from an exhaust leak somewhere.

Have you taken the carb apart and cleaned it yet?
