05 sportsman battery dies while sitting
I have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 500. After sitting for about a month I discovered the battery was dead. I could not get it to recharge, so I bought a new battery. A week later I went riding and everything was great. Then after sitting for 6 days, the battery was completely dead again. Is there anything that would continue to draw enough power to kill the battery, even when the key if removed? Not sure if it is important, but as soon as I start it with a jumper battery pack, the fan comes on and I get a message that the engine is hot, even though it really is not. I suppose I could put a disconnect on the battery terminal, but I would really prefer to find and fix the problem correctly.

I saw through searching on the internet that my quad is subject to the massive recall for the ECM module. There are cases of this overheating and catching fire, even though the key is removed, ignition off. I am not the original owner, so I guess that is why I was not notified of the recall.
I have no confidence in my local Polaris dealer. I went in to the store to talk to the service manager when I first had this problem a couple of weeks ago. He told me there was a recall but specifically said it was only feul injected models, which mine is not. He was obviously wrong. From the polaris website I was able to bring up the listing of model number & serial number. My ATV is on the list. This isn;t the first time this dealer gave me bad info. I had a broken front motor mount on my wife's trailboss 300. They wanted $400 to replace all motor mounts. They wouldn't just replace the broken one. I got the quad back and put a new mount in myself for $11.64. It took about 15 minutes to install. Hundreds of miles later it is still fine.
