Whats the point to trying to take the 4x4 components out of your 4x4 quad? If your having problems with the 4WD, fix them, it has to be cheaper and easier then trying to take all the 4x4 components out! If you just want less weight for better performance, try doing some engine mods for more power to compensate for the excess weight. That to will be easier and cheaper. Beyond that you would probably be better off selling it and buying what better suits your needs.

Rick

P.S its the differential housing your talking about I think.

I guess technically, you could unbolt the differential from the frame and pull the 3 driveshafts. I mean it WOULD work. There would be big gaping holes where the cv joints are, and I have the feeling that dirt & water would get in there, ruining it from being used as a 4x4 again. I can't think of any way to seal that off to make it permanent.
To do it 'right', you should get the front strut lower castings off of a 2-wd, along with the hubs & bearings. Now you are starting to get into expense, unless you can get parts of a wrecked machine, or one with a blown motor, etc.
I would seriously talk to a dealer about trading. Roughly speaking, a 4x4 should be worth about $500 more than a 2-wd in equal condition. If they have one in equal condition, I bet they would trade even up.

Don't do it. You will RUIN the RESALE value.
SELL it or TRADE it in. Polaris dealers are pretty good about trade-ins, and Polaris have pretty darn good resale/trade in value. If you dismantle your front wheel drive your rig will be wide open to dirt and destruction and it's value will be ... well.. not much. Go to School.
Trade it in on a Sport Quad. You obviously need a hot rod, and an education.

Get off your soapbox BLH. This guy needs an education and a sport quad. Mentioning THANKSGIVING was in reference to the fact that today IS Thanksgiving. There is no slam, not even
a reference other than it is the date and he had some time off because of it.
I am part Creek and proud of it. I also have a B.A. in History.
We could be celebrating Viking day, Italian Day,
English Day, Athabascan Day or any of the many
races and diverse ethnic groups that came to America. At least the Pilgrims were relatively
peaceful, non-military, trying to avoid religeous persecution. Compare that to the military Vikings, Spanish, Italians, French, etc. Don't forget the Navajos and Apaches, they got here about 100 years before the white man. Of Athabascan descent,(Eskimo) they all but wiped out the descendants of the Anasazi, the peaceful Zuni and Hopi, and who, to this day are land-grabbing what is left of their reservations.
Thanksgiving is a celebration of America, and is basically a Harvest festival, found in almost all cultures. That the Pilgrims is the focal point is interesting, as they were a relatively non-violent group that celebrates it's relationship with Native Americans. Okay, it didn't work out but Naivete' and Stupidity continue to this day on all sides of racial issues. Besides, Columbus Day is the target most
Native Americans blame for all this anyway. I didn't know this had spilled over to Thanksgiving,
but then you are only married in right?
And while all of this was going on the Spanish Army was already murdering Native Americans in Santa Fe (1609).

Try running an add, and see if you can find someone who wants to trade a 2x4 with you, and just let him know you intend to keep the mods. I had a Sport (2 wheel drive scrambler) and I would have traded for a 4x4 in a minute. I'm sure their's someone who would be willing. Try your local dealer, they may have a used one that you could work soming out on keeping your mods for the next bike. Anyway, thats what I would do.

Ahhh. NOW we are getting somewhere!!! You said you want to get rid of the 4wd because it was kicking in without warning, and twisting off driveshafts!
I think I just had an inspriation!! Take the front hubs apart. In the hub, you will find the roller 'basket' It is a funny looking little guy, with a bunch of rollers on it, surrounded by a spring. VERY CAREFYLLY, one at a time, pull the rollers out. I say carefully, because you don't want to stretch out the spring. We want to save it. Put the rollers in a baby food jar, clearly labeled as to what they are. Put the 'basket' back oriented the way it was when you took it out, but now without the rollers. I think you re-tighten the axle nut with about 100 inch pounds of preload (better double check me on this, I am working from memory & the ol' brain aint what it used to be). Refill the hubs with oil & you now have a 2-wd only machine. When you are ready to trade it off, or ever want it to be a 4x4 again, put the rollers back in, again carefully, one at a time to not stretch the spring out. Once the spring gets stretched, you will have to buy a new one.

This is likely the best way to do it with little or no expense. All it will cost you is a little hub oil.
I agree with the other guys, do NOT just yank the differential and driveshafts out, as the gaping holes will collect gunk, and it will rust, ruining your resale value, even if you try to put it back. If you HAVE to get rid of the differential and driveshafts, find some 2wd strut bottoms & hubs so you don't run your 4x4 ones with the CV joint exposed to the elements.
