Default Front axle play??

My buddy just bought an '04 SP600 used with 941 miles and 106 hours on it. We have been going over all the components with a fine tooth comb and found some play in the front axles. It is where the axles go into the gearcase. The dealer said that this was normal. That they are tight when new and "break-in" abit in a short period of time.

I am wondering if this is really normal or is the dealer blowing smoke. Can anyone tell me if there machine has any play in the front axle or if this means there is a problem?

It is not alot of movement or play, but it definitely moves on both sides of the gearcase.

Thanks.

Default Front axle play??

I had wondered the same thing myself. I have an 06 500EFI and it too has a good bit of play (up and down, back and forth) on the front axels. Everything seems to run fine, and it's all still under warranty so .. maybe the dealer is shooting you straight .. I guess I'd just have to wonder what the "short period of time" is? I've got a little over 20 hours useage on my quad now, and around 325km or so ..

Thanks for the response NLWarrior. My own machine has about 1000 miles and a little over 100 hours, but my axle one the right moves very little and the left one is still rock solid. I dunno. Maybe some others will weigh in on the subject also. Thanks again.

My 2004 700 has the same play in the front axles. 2000 miles since I noticed it and no problems yet. Have 28in. tires too so the play must not be a problem.

I have noticed brand new ones all the same way. Makes a little clatter when decelerating but not that bad. Good to hear it is not a problem in the long run. Charlie

Thanks for all the responses. You all have put my friend's mind to rest on the subject. He is certainly happy that it is not an issue.

Thanks again,
Bloom
