Hi's and Lo's on at same time?
#1
I recently added a Painless Wiring relay kit to my Chevy truck, so that when i go from lo-beams to brights, the low beams stay on, so i'm getting all 4 beams to work when the brights are clicked on. So, is there some tech savvy way to do this in the 700? I don't like either lo or high beams by them self.. so why not both? Seems this can be done and will offer more lighting cose in and at a distance.

mb,
I put a kit in my 700 to do what you're talking about. I bought mine from a guy on here called elkbow. Real easy to install, excellent directions. not sure if he is still selling them, if not check out quadovator.com. I bought a kit from them that turned my rear work lights into back-up lights when I put the thing in reverse. I believe they have the 3 headlight kit as well.

If that link doesn't work simply go to www.ebay.com and typ in Polaris Sportsman Light Modification kit, in the Ebay search engine and it will pull up many,,very inexpensive and easy to install,,,,,This is where I got mine and it has very easy instructions and is very easy to install,,only takes minutes.
I installed mine on my 2006 Sportsman 700 EFI without any hassle.

I hope you guys do not mean the 3-way light mod, already have that. If you are talking about both beams on headlight pod at same time, I wondered the same thing, but I took it a step further. I measured the temp of the plastic headlight lens on high, then compared it to the temp with both on. The new temp was MUCH higher( forgot the temp now, this was last year) Anyway this steered me away from it, but it sounds as if some of you are doing it without any issues. Please respond, to insure this is what you guys are doing! The only reason I am a little nervous is because I saw a Big Bear melt the lens with Hi and low on at same time, the switch was in the middle and the guy didn't know it until the lens looked like an "A" cup. I suggested a bra to him, but he didn't laugh! LOL!!!

The MV has two lights under the front deck that are the Lo beams-- move the left handlebar mounted thumb light swith to Hi and the pod mounted light, between the handlebars is activated as the Hi beam, but the lower, more 'flood' lights go out. Its now one or the other, but not both. The kit is a way to have both on when the light switch is turned on. Perhaps a bit more current draw (engineers??) but the benefits of both sets on at the same time at night are worth it, IMO. Different locations for the lights may eliminate heating/melting issues one may experience w/ a pod mounted hi/lo assembly.

Just to clarify, I am talking about making both of the filiments, on the pod bulb, on at same time. This may melt the plastic!

no no no...the upper pod between the handlebars is the Hi mode only. The Lo beams are below, and the OEM light switch design will allow only one set of lights to be on at the same time.. His or Los, but not both... It's not a filiment issue, but separately wired lights alltogether. Otherwise, the lights would of course get really hot and melt or worse. The same kit is made for trucks, cars, etc and its great. This will allowthe lo beams to work when switched on, but go to hi beams and they come on yet the lo beams remain on. So its like like super brights.
hope this sheds some light on the situation.

Well, since I appear to be “the other guy” mentioned here, a response seems appropriate.
For the life of me I can’t figure out what all the confusion is about such a simple procedure. We’ve been enjoying the 3 Headlight Mod on our Sportsmans (and Magnums) since ’97 with no melting, no switch damage and no excessive electrical drain issues. It’s simple and it works. I’ve always been confused about why Polaris doesn’t just build them this way at the factory, but since I began offering this mod for sale, its popularity makes me glad they don’t.
The 3 Headlight Mod kit Quadovator sells is $12 + $2 shipping, about twice as much as those available on Ebay. Honestly I’ve never seen one of the other kits but from R&D I can tell you the diode pack has to be capable of handling the load or it will heat up to the point it will fail, at the least, and damage wiring, at most. The diode pack we use is high quality and has never caused a problem. The price reflects that quality.
As far as application, the Quadovator kit will work on any Polaris with three headlights and it will allow the Rangers to run with both high and low filaments lit at the same time. We’ve been doing this on Rangers since ’99 without any lens melting issues. To make the point that the kit “even works on ’06 800s” is a bit misleading. Sure it does, so what? It’s a Polaris with 3 headlights just like all the rest. Same yellow wire, same green wire, same handlebar switch.
I’d be very careful about those “free instructions” to override the yellow button. I do know for a fact those instructions were outdated for quite a while. Some folks tried to follow those “old” instructions on the newer machines and got into trouble. I can’t say if the instructions have been updated but the Quadovator Reverse Override Locker kit is complete with a waterproof/dustproof switch (required so that you can turn the mod off to use the yellow button to page through your speedo displays/diagnostics). Like all our mods, it’s tried and true, causing no electrical weirdness whatsoever. In fact, since we’re riders and users of these modifications we’ve taken great care not to offer ANY mod that would disable a machine. In other words, if any of our electrical mods should fail, be it a switch or wiring or relay or diode, the worst that could happen is that function would stop working. It would not leave you disabled on the trail. The quality components we use along with extensive trail testing are what allows this level of confidence.
There are a lot of Quadovator customers in the ATV Connection community. This forum is the first place a lot of us go for answers to problems with our machines. If any of our mods was problematic, you’d know about it in these pages. I invite you to do a search on our 3 Headlight Mod or just Quadovator and see if you find anything about burning or melting or anything negative at all.
Most of us just want all three lights on when we hit the High on the light switch. That’s what the 3 Headlight Mod does. For those who desire the option of still turning on just the pod light we can build a kit with a diode and a switch that accommodates that need. All our mods are made in the USA too, as a matter of fact they're built on my workbench just outside of Portage Wisconsin.
