Blew a CV Joint
#1
Howdy all, havn't been here for a while.
Riding Saturday I blew out a front CV joint. Do I need any special tools to change it out? Where can I get the best price for a good replacement.
Thanks, Jeff

as I am presently sort of rebuilding my front suspension and have some newfound insight into how it all should work, what does "blew out a front CV joint" mean??
is it the normal universal joint off the bike or the end going into the back of the hub [with the six big ball bearings], or is it the elec/mech clutch gismo that engages 4 wheel drive in the front part of the hub?

I blew one yesterday too! I was 25 miles from the truck. I put it up on a rock popped the lower arm off and pulled the tire out and the axil popped out then I yanked it out of the diff and put it back together and drove out. I used a leatherman and the 14 that came in the kit.

I assume the gorilla axles are more expensive than stock replacments. I found Dennis Kirk had replacement cvs for $106, I'll check with the dealer later this week.
Thanks, Jeff

same here - one of the boots had long since fallen off and because I ride on the beach the joint was full of a greasy sand type combo
I removed the ball bearings and fully cleaned it out, repacked with grease, replaced ***** and new boot and seems OK
what I did notice was that the whole "cup" that holds the joint was harder to turn than the one on other side so maybe corrosion did work its way down the spline, but I normally leave IN 4 WD so I guess that dont matter too much
