Ignition Key Fitting Multiple Quads
#32
What I was trying to say in my previous post is that with atleast 1016 different key codes there should not be this many people with keys that will start friends quads. The statistical chance of that happening with only one key code working an ignition is worse than winning the lottery. On top of that having this many people that belong to this forum that that specific statistical anomally has occurred to is so hard to believe it is almost impossible. I'm not saying that Polaris should be responsible for ATV thefts because of that, but if somebody can come in your yard, cut your chain, then take a random key from another Polaris, start it, and ride off that is a serious problem for me.
As far as cutting a chain or something like that to get to your ATV I wasn't talking about heavy machinery to get to it. I was talking about a $50 battery powered dremel tool from Walmart with a 1 1/2 inch cut off wheel. A chain isn't gonna cut it as far as keeping it safe. Rewiring the ignition to steal and ATV is something most people wouldn't undertake, but cutting a chain, and popping a random key in is something an 8 year old could do.

I would say bare minimum chain it where it is out of sight of anybody just passing by. As I've said before though a chain wouldn't even stop a teenager from taking it on a joy ride. Much less a professional thief from stealing it. Best case scenario would be in a locked garage or storage shed with the battery removed (I know there are further steps you could take if money was no object, but this is for the average person). That way if they do manage to get to it, and get it out they still can't start it key or not, and will have to push it to get away with it. I know this is either impossible, or neither cost or time effective for most people, and I don't do that my self. Never store it on a trailer where somebody could just pull in, hook it up, and be gone.
What I was refering in my post was when you quoted the last thing I said. Your response was you have industrial battery powered cutters at work. I have pneumatic bolt cutters at work. That doesn't necessarily mean the average thief would own, or have easy access to them. I was talking about a 10.8 volt dremel tool with a small cutoff wheel that costs $50 in Walmart. Anybody with with $50 could walk up to to you however many thousand dollar ATV, cut the chain, pop it in neutral, and walk off with it in less than 5 minutes. I'm not talking about little chain either. I've cut through stuff with mine that a set of 24" bolt cutters would barely put a dent in (such as the masterlock I mentioned before).

Just moving the grove/slot on the key could quadruple that 1016 combos ahhh but that might cost more $ like $1 per quad maybe

The key on atvs and motorcycles is really a transparent measure of security. First, if I understand the previous locksmith's post correctly after @1016 units unique coding is impossible in this application. Second, bypassing the key in current polaris models is simple( we found this out when my friend forgot his quad key one time). Third, I doubt a majority (not all) of atv thefts are accomplished using a key--most are physically rolled and taken by an alternative transportation device ie truck trailer etc. Where I do think Polaris may have a problem (liability) is for those percentage of drive away thefts using a non-specific key if/when an alternative security system like BRP is reasonably available PROVIDED all other reasonable steps were taken by the owner to prevent the theft and the failure to have the alternative system was the prime contributing factor to the theft ie the theft would more likely than not have not occurred if the device was installed. And yes I said it Floodrunner---Liability!!!!

Just as a reference the cheapest house lock we use has 6 different size pins. I would guess from looking at my key that there are atleast that many just from the differing depths of cuts in my key. I used 4 as an example because my key has that many different ones by itself. Using the cheap lock's 6 pin sizes as an example that would put the total different combinations at 7776. Making it even more unlikely that 2 people that know each other's keys would match. The more pins there are the higher that number goes exponentially.

Several years ago I started my buddie's Honda with a screw driver. I could only turn it to "on", not all the way to "start", but then I just kick started it. I found I could push started it by myself that way as well.

Even though I started this thread I don't worry about anyone stealing my quad. I just wanted people to know about the possibility of this happening. It would be more of an issue for me when I am in trouting and the bike/boat trailer is parked by the side of a pond for hours on end. Its not that people where I live are overly honest its just the small town mentality where everybody knows everbody elses business and you can't do something without the neighbours knowing. People look out for one another here and there is no worry about someone coming in and trying to make off with something without one of the neighbours coming to see whats going on.
