Default Battery elimination

Older polarises needed to have a battery in the system or it would blow out any bulb that was turned on. I want to eliminate the weight of the battery. It has been suggested to find the smallest 12 volt I can find and use that. I'd like to get rid of the whole system. Ideas
Thanks Doc

I have a '94 Polaris 400L Sport. I believe it is not wise to run the quad without a battery in it, IIRC, it regulated the vlotage going through the system. So, I don't think you can get rid of the whole system. Not sure if you can use a smaller size battery inleu of the larger battery.

doc to doc - over!!!

hi doc lang, dont quite understand the question

are you saying you use the pull start [recoil] so want to simply rely on the alternator to supply power once started but as it puts out some 20 V maybe then you are concerned it will "blow things" - is that correct?

also dont understand "save weight" matter, but I would love to enter into meaningful wobiscums on these matters

Try HPD or Rick Ritter, they should be able to get what you need, there needs to be a resistance devise installed between the battery cables I think to keep the correct system voltage when running. White Bros used to sell it....

An outfit like Battery Mart will have a small 12v battery that is probably incapable of starting the engine but will provide the power you need to keep the system happy.

White Bros makes a battery eliminator kit for our 400 2 strokes. It simply consists of a large capacitor that is run between the positive and negitive wires for the battery. It will absorb any voltage spikes which would damage the bulbs. I don't have one, nor have I seen one, but I am going to be looking at an electronics store for the largest capacitor I can find there.

The starter has been removed to lighten the machine for drag racing. Rick Ritter is the one who suggested the smaller battery. White bros has a website I assume Thanks Doc

OK its for racing so remove all jewellery and shoes and socks as well and get hair cut before race

but I would think a small battery [which IS in effect a capacitor] would be lighter than a big capacitor, and do a better job of keeping to 12V or so

seems ATVs dont go to sophistication of voltage reg and I notice my volt meter sits right on 14V all the time while in motion and only drops to 13.5 or so with all lights on [which figures as alternator is 200 W according to the book]

Capacitor or resistor?
