Oil pump priming necessary???
#1
I just had my oil changed on my Outlaw and I asked the dealer if the primed the pump after changing the oil and they said it wasnt necessary and that there service manual didnt call for it. My owners manual makes it seem as though this is a must perform procedure after the oil change. I would appreciate anyones expertise with this matter.

I THINK this is only needed if the top line is taken off and the 1/2 cup was drained from the engine.....caper.....I am just ready to post the common way people really change there oil.....Lets see if we get some more replies....

On my scrambler your supposed to pinch the vent line once you get it started, to prime it. It 's really simple. But the first few times i changed my oil I didn't do it because I didn't know about it. I don't know if a scrambler is similiar to a outlaw. If it is i would say that since its pretty simple to do, it would be cheap insurance to do it.

you prime the scrambler and outlaw the same way by pinching off the oil tank vent line.the owmers manual tells you to do it because polaris wants you to do it as a precaution. We do it on every machine that you can prime that way.

Both my owners manual and service manual describe this procedure. I did it by hand and it worked just fine. One tip though, you won't hear this rush of air when you release the clamp or pinch from the tube unless enough pressure has built up in the oil tank. The best way to accomplish this is to not idle the engine for the 10 to 20 seconds that it calls for, rather hold the revs at about 1,600 rpm.

Thanks for the response guys! I guess my question now is should I do anything with priming the pump now that I have the quad home? I havent ridden it yet. Can the pump be primed at this point or is it even necessary now? Thanks again for your feedback!

It wouldn't hurt it to start it up and do the priming procedure, for peace of mind.

I have a 2002 Sportsman 700 and I'm not sure if it needs a priming procedure or not; however, after I have done an oil change, I do rev it up a little to build pressure up rather than just let it sit and idle. I also have a Kawasaki Ninja ZX6R and after every oil change, the light stays on for a brief period. If I let it idle it does not build enough pressure to prime the pump. A few good revs are enough to build up the pressure and the light goes out. Would have been nice if an oil pressure monitor on my model was standard. It has it on the display, but was not an option. I have thought about putting on an aftermarket guage, but the clearance between the brass plug and my belt cover is very small and I have not been able to find a fitting that will do the trick.
