I'll bet that the head gasket is bad, with all the compression blowing by. Might be worth the $10.00 to put one in.

Well I took your guys advice and am putting in new rings and gaskets much to my wife's chagrin (she says "it runs damnit!! Just drive it and quit screwin around!").
And damnit to hell i wish I had known about that Gen1 and 2 stuff before, I just ordered a new front half-shaft and service manual this morning...lol

welcome to our wifes worst nightmares. men and their toys lol. mine gave up along time ago from telling me that im pain in the a.. now when i talk about something she says just go and buy it new or what ever so she doesnt have to listen to it.

Default Carb issue with 1988 Polaris TrailBoss 250

Yours is a Gen I so you have the same setup as the 85-87 with the upgrades of course such as they were. By the way if you ever replace your front struts you must use the Polaris replacement struts. Some dealers for Kimpex and others claim that their shock will fit any 85-92 tb model not true. The strut on these is welded to the hub mounting tab so it is not simply a slide in shock.
