There’s no reason to exaggerate or get defensive about your “discovery.” Your right, the schematic you came up with to turn the work lights into automatic back-up lights is the same I’ve been using for a year. I prefer the manual switch method of locking and unlocking the reverse override because it allows you to turn the mod off and on but last spring I did wire one machine like you show because that’s what a customer wanted.

It’s all about personal preference. I have two customers with electrical engineering degrees (and working in the field) who figured out the schematic but told me it’s just easier to buy my kit for $24 than to chase down all the parts and pieces and build it from scratch. And lets face it, not everyone is as willing to start cutting into their wiring harness as you and I without specific instructions and a number to call if they run into problems. Electricity to some is like brain surgery is to me, completely foreign. So for those who enjoy tinkering (like me and you) the schematic you provide is certainly worth what you’re charging for it. But don’t expect to build this kit for $1.50 unless relays, wire, connectors, zip ties, and shrink tube is 75% cheaper north of the border. For those who want to do it quick and easy with precut wires and the package already put together correctly to eliminate confusion, $24 is a small price to pay.

I don't find I'm overly defensive. I'm just trying to get people into doing a simple modification. I did exagerate the price of materials but not by much. I don't care if people buy your kit, I just put a how-to out there so someone who wants to do it themself can, and as I described I have a switched reverse lock-out how-to on the way. I also put my e-mail address in multiple places so anyone who runs into trouble can ask for help, and if it comes right down to it I can make a simple phone call.

Cormacs, good information and excellent walk-through. I have a question for you, I assume the you created the page that the link takes you to, looks like you are pretty good with computers and the such. I was wondering if you could take the web page that you created, and make the same in a pdf format so people can print out and take the instructions with pictures to their bike for help. I understand if you don't want to do that, but I presume it could be done "fairly" simple.

I am glad there are people like you who are willing to help others out with information like this and not charge them. I personally like to do things myself and not pay for things that I can do, I maybe cheap, but what the hell, if I can do it, why not go the shed and drink a couple of beers, turn on the TV and shoot the **** with some buddies. Sounds like a good evening to me!

Keep up the good work everyone!!!!!!!

How can you get the reverse lights to work without having the worklight option?

I have the housing for the lights, they didn't come with bulbs or a switch obviously. It looks like the wiring is there though.
