Default Scrambler 400 Engine Rebuild Question

Have a 96 Scrambler 400, the motor seized, pulled the top end off and cylinder was slightly scored, had it bored and was ready to put it back on, I then noticed that there were shavings in the bottom end, that did not come from the piston, upon further inspection, I found that the connecting rod has scratches and rub marks on the bottom and sides and so does the bottom end of the motor, so for some reason the rod has rubbed and scored the bottom end, any idea what would have caused this? anyone have an idea why it would have done that?

thanks

really bad and I mean really bad crank bearings may have let the crank push down into the case. or a bad rod end bearing, pull up on the connecting rod, straight up if you feel any play it needs to be replaced(up and down play)

Pull that crank and have it inspected. It can be rebuilt for about $200. Crankworks in Tempe, AZ does the best rebuilds. You will have a new motor then.

Thanks for the fast replies! The odd thing is the rod has no play left to right or up and down. It seems nice and solid.

Start a new topic on this and you will get more input. But I would take it back to the dealer and have the air bleed out of the system and make sure the radiator isnt plugged with a mouse nest or something.

you have to split the case halfs to inspect the whole thing. the news is your motor may have sustained some damage another time and jammed a piece of broken piston skirt between the crank and the case. split the cases. that is easier down with the counterbalance shaft pulled first as it is difficult to pul them both at the same time. I have rebuilt three of these motors, so just ask if you have anymore questions. replace your piston with a forged wiseco to avoid skirt breakage
