About to buy a 2001 Sportsman 500......need some advice....

First off, it's a 4x4, with 231 miles, with a cowling/windshield, an extra fuel cell mounted behind the rear rack, front and rear tube bumpers, for $4,250.
I'm gonna offer the old guy $4K, but was wondering if there's anything in particular to look out for on these model years. Like I said, it only has 231 miles and literally looks brand new.
And could I put a 1" lift and 27-28 inch tires on this without fear of snapping CV's regularly? The only mods would be a clutch spring/weight change, a pipe, and maybe an airbox mod.
Thanks!!

according to nada book that only books fro around 3300.00 w/ the windshield. it seems a little high to me but its up to you. there a pretty bullet proof machine. yes you can lift it, w/ bigger tires.

is it a HO (high output?) in 01 they offered a standard 500 and a 500HO.
even 4000 is kinda high for an 01 model... i sold my 01 500ho with 120 hrs on it in May for $3100-- the condition was great and I thought the buyer and I were very reasonable.
I'd say 3500... 3700 if it has winch.
You willl have problems breaking axles with 28" tires if you rag it hard in the mud... so to prevent breaking axles, when you get stuck.. don't work it too hard, just have someone pull you out.
last comment: if its not a HO, i wouldn't give 3000 for it.. you will be much happier with the 500ho.

we have 2 01 500ho's they are good machines. mine has had 27's and 26's on it from day one and the 27's will rub on the front sometimes when you abuse it. never had an axle problem. just make sure you grease it regularly especially the front drive shaft where the slip yoke is. really hard to get to and gets forgotten alot.
