Sportsman 500 not staing running
#1
I have a 2005 sportsman 500, and the wheeler starts up sometimes ok, but it will not idle. But then the next day it will run just fine. I drained the carb bowl. I found no dirt, but have not taken the carb apart yet! I was woundering if anyone may know what is going on. Also when I have the wheeler wide open the RPM's reads 0, but at idle it reads fine.

Hi RacerSteve, I had trouble with my son's ATP 500 H0. It would run fine and idle if you kept the throttle pushed in a little bit. Once you let up it would stall. I took the cap off the throttle and noticed that when the throttle was let go it would make two contacts meet and the quad would stall. I took the slack out of the throttle with the adjustment that is about a foot down the cable (maybe less) and it didn't stall anymore. Hope this helps.

if that doesn't work there is a an adjuster below the carb on the left side of the wheeler. you'll need to take off the plastic siding to see it. It will have a "star" type screw driver piece that is attached to a black tube that is on a hanger (turn right to increase left to decrease it doesn't take much to change the RPM's). Try adjusting it. My ATP did this and this is how I resolved the problem. I must say after doing this I can't adjust free play on the handle bars now, but i guess that doesn't matter cuz she idles great now.
