you cant use a K&N filter because it dosnt have a backflow valve, since the 800 motor is dry sump, you'd end up with issues

Spyder,

Where did you get that the K&N has no anti-drainback valve?

I went through all this before.
Do a seach under my user name back about the first of the year.

I posted the e-mail from K&N:

Dear Don,

Unfortunately the part number that you have given does not cross over to anything in our system. The filter for your ATV is still in testing and development. If you have any further questions feel free to give us a call at 1-800-858-3333.

Thank you for writing.

their automotive filters are the same, so i assumed that their quad filters would be similarly designed or exactly the same

not along ago i read an article somehwere on the net. a group of engineers gathered as many brands of oil filters possible and ran there own tests on oil filters. they were not bias, they did not work at or have any interests to the outcome. their only desire was to dismantle, inspect, test what was the top of the line "brand" oil filter.

1) Mobil 1

2) Wix and Purolator Pure One tied for second. there are various Purolator fiflters. it must be the "Purolator Pure 1"
filter.

all others like Fram and STP where crap and nothing but mass advertising mumbo gumbo.

and as for matching your genuine polaris filter with a quality oil filter. take the Polaris genuine filter from your bike
and and go to the oil filter display and you can visually match them up. most all filters have the same bolt and
thread pattern.

Default More 800 oil filter options?

Both the K&N Hp-1010 and the 1006 have anti-drainback valves. I have now put 100 miles on the 1010 and it appears to be fine. Oil is clean no probs. The e-mail from K&N is the company's conservative approach since they have not tested the filter for the application which is OK. However, Purolator doesn't list the Spts as an application for the PL-14610 which has been used by numerous Spt owners and it works fine. I am not saying do not do your homework but there is no need to exclude filters that match the application just because a specific manufacturer will not yet recommend such for our quads because they have not "tested" it yet. In fact I have yet to see one except Wix as posted above on interchange do so. And I am not touting the K&N as the best filter. But it is another option rather than paying an outlandish price for the Polaris (once you are out of warranty if you want to be safe on the issue). I would really like to see someone do a test on these atv applicable filters. I am going to tear apart the Polaris I just replaced to see what it shows.
