Default Sportsman 800 Tire Clearance

Of corse like most of you the PXT radials just didn't cut it for me. I heard alot about the ITP 589 through my peers and heard it to be a wonderfull tire so I bought them. I tried to stick with the stock size but of corse it didn't clear the tie rod boot and I had to put spacers. After intalling the spacers the bike handled like crap. Before I could run over logs and not feel a thing and now I had an aunt pile and it jerks the handle bar out of my hand. That and I can't stand the vigorous vibration above 30 mph. So I said the hell with that. I went ahead and ordered some Polaris 14" Bruiser rims for it. 7" up front and 8' in rear. I am going to put mudlight xtr 27"tall, 9" wide front, and 11" wide in the rear. I was wondering if anyone could give me some good news about clearance. They will be on the fourwheeler by December the 7th and I'll let you know what is what. But, for now I am clueless so please input.

The 27" will work fine and no rub on full compression. As for your dislike of the wheel spacers, i feel your pain, mine does the same thing, it is the nature of the beast. To fix this problem all you need to do is buy a set of wheels with offset spacing front and back, this will get rid of the wheel spacer rings and bring the handeling back to near stock. Just remember, the main reason the bars jump out of your hands is not the spacers, but the major increace in traction that the more aggressive tires will give you. I hope you are not buying the 589's and figuring you will have a stock ride and the bars will take no effort to hold on to.

I, too, bought just the 27" 589 tires after the PXTs dumped on their first ride, and immediately noticed the clearance issue. For me, it was an easy decision. Picked up the phone and ordered ITP C series wheels, and have plenty of clearance. Ride quality is good as well, nothing harsh about the handlebar feedback at all. On pavement you get a lot of feedback due to the big tread lugs, but that's about it.

this is the reason i went w/ the xtr's 27" on mine becuase i still wanted that radail ride w/ out the loosing the steerabilty. alos doing my reserch first i found out buying the itp rims was the best decision so i wouldnt have the clearance problems you have. the xtr tires are kind or the best of both worlds as far as handling and traction.

Stendori -

I am thinking of buying the Mudlites for
my 450. Are you suggesting I need to go
with a set of rims as well? Also, I know you
are talking 27" for your Sp800's. Can I
benefit in the same manner w/27" on mine (450)?
Or should I just go w/26". Also, what size of
rims?

Good thread, as to I need to know this info too..

Thanks,

Two more things (Sorry), how much more weight
would this add to my overall Quad?

And is this a good overall trail riding tire? I ride
more probably packed dirt/gravel at GreenRidge, MD
but occassionally over the Eastern Shore more soft
Mud (Marshy). Yes I get stuck alot!

Thanks for answering all these pest'ring questions.

rtick, i wouldnt go w/ 27" on your 450. i put my 800 rims and 26" pxt tires on the wifes 450 and it has no problem turning them. if you go w/over 8 " tires wide up front like the xtr's are 9" wide then you will have to put either spacers or off set rims. its kinda of a better deal to buy a wheel/tire comb package and cheaper if your going to do it anyways. as for the mud lites xl vs.xtr mudlites i beleave the m.lites will vibrate more on hard pack while the xtr is a radial w/ more flexability to hug the trails better and it being a 6 ply its rugged as well. weight wise im guessing no more then 6 to 7 lbs. w/ the alum rims. hope it helps.

Thanks for all the good info. Stendori!
I'll start pricing out the XTR MudLites 26" for
my 450. Am I assuming I need all four or just
the two for the back? Also, I am willing to buy new
rims with it, but I want to keep away from the shiny alloy
(Alum) wheels due to hunting reasons. The bright
sparkles may spook the deer, eheheh.

Thanks,

R'
