Please I have tried everything I know to do. My polais seems to have to much compression. I have replaced the compression release gam, starter, starter solenoid, battery cables, battery and I have 6 to 8 hundred dollars in it and it still will not spin over and crank everytime. Sometimes it will crank fine, other times it acts like the compression release is not working. If you pull the starter rope till it gos pass the compression stroke and then use the starter it will crank fine. Help, Help.
Any thoughts?

Make sure the exhaust valve lash is correct. if the lash is too great the decompression will not work correctly.

Also, clean your battery and starter cables, and check the condition for your battery.

Worn cam exhaust lobe? I had a friend whose exhaust lobe on the cam on his 98 SP 500 was GONE. I have no idea if that is your problem, but it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

My question is, can you turn it over by pulling the hand rope? If you can with relative ease it is most likely the starter motor.

It's probably a bad cam.

the only problems polaris had with the cam is with the failure to change your oil resulting in oilfilter blockage and insuficent oil to the top of the motor.now first pull the rocker cover off(wash the bike good first)you can do this with out pulling the tank and the fenders just remove the side fairings.then pull the spark plug out.then turn it over and watch the rocker arms move up and down, they should move the same equal distance up and down,if they do or dont check the lash between the rocker adjuster and the valve.to do this make sure the piston is at top dead center.then check lash,it should be 0.6000 on all valves.if this checks out good it is either your starter brushes going bad or your battery is weak.starter brush kit runs $35

Thanks Starksrebel for you comments.

The ATV has a new starter from polaris, new battery also. I thank you for letting me know that I don't have to pull the gas tank. I am going the check the gam lobes asap.

Thanks again
