Default Crank seals Polaris 400

I have a 97 Polaris 400 that's blowing water out the exaust. I rebuilt the top end new wiseco .080 over new gaskets but still passing water. Went into the waterpump and found bad seals. My question is how is the crank seal placed? I have always thought that the lip of the seal goes toward the medium being contained, counterbalance oil in this case. If I'm not mistaken the crank seal was installed lip towards the inside of the motor. Wouldn't this allow oil to get into the crankcase? Any help wold be appreciated the parts manuals don't show detail of lip direction.
Thanks
