You can make the 400 fly with a lot less money. The 500 has some mods available but not near as many as the 400. The 400 is a bit more maintenance tho.

Ya same hear I have the 400 Scrammy 4x4. Ive ridden the both and they both have there own set of good traits. The 500 having a little more low end. They both make pretty damn close to the same horse power numbers, but the 400 is gonna respond to mods better, and be faster in the long run with the right mods. Personaly I would rather rebuild the top end on a 2 stroke before a 4 stroke any day of the week. Both machines are great you just have to sit down and think about what traits you would rather have....GL

Default 400 or 500 scrambler?

owned two 500 4x4 ('00 and '01) and one 400 4x4 ('95 = first year). friends had (2) other 400 4x4 (both '99). My first 500 lost to the 400s on top end, pretty close off the line. I put HPD clutch kit and pipe and won at the top and bottom. The whole HPD systems was shot within 750 miles, so I don't recommend going that route if you ride high miles. The second 500 was faster than the 400s right from the factory. low end is a bit nicer on the 500s and doesn't come on quite as abrupt as the 400s so its nicer when 4-by-in. you can get more out of your two stroke with mods. 4 strokes cost more to fix, but you do it less often. Bottom line....if you don't plan to do any or limited mods go with the 500 hands down.
